ETCHELLS WORLDS DATA 2018
The charts below are based on data collected and compiled by Andrew Palfrey.
I have charted some key parts of the data to further illustrate the relative popularity of different gear and the relationship with average overall placement in the fleet.
The first thing to observe is that there are no magic bullets! Indeed, the most notable (and encouraging) aspect of the data is it's obvious outlier: Matthew Chew and his 1992 Pamcraft. The success of this crew supports the exciting conclusion that almost any boat, in the right hands, can succeed in the Etchells fleet. This is to be celebrated.
The next important observation is that this is a small sample size. Clearly, it was the intention of Andrew Palfrey to focus on the top 12 and, in particular, on the thoughts of the crews themselves - not simply on their gear.
In this sense, the data speak for themselves and do reveal some trends. It would be very interesting to extend the survey in future years - possibly at registration or during the measuring process.
